MATTER OF IDENTITY – WORKSHOP.

How may we keep our identities steady in this troubled 2019?

“Nowadays we take the crisis of identity for granted: no matter how fuzzy, fluid, dazed it is, the real challenge is to not dissociate ourselves in the global flow.”

On the 9th of July I had the opportunity to meet the students of Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milano. The Institute was holding “Matter of Identity”, an intensive Seminar Week for their students and NABA commissioned me to develop a workshop based on the theme: identity seen by different points of view.

My challenge was to help the students into a state of mind where they would be able to not dissociate from reality by being more aware of their identity.

The first thing to do was amplifying the chaos by mirroring each other both with virtual and human nets, bringing to light all of our shades, opposite aspects and contradictions.

Then we scanned our body and took a moment to really check how we feel.

.

.

After this phase, once we connected with ourselves and we understood our feelings, we went trough an integration process, the path back home.

.

.

As the brief given by the Institute explained: “what remains of each of us when the algorithm takes control in the decision-making process? Does “digital” mean differentiate us infinitely within a net of virtual mirrors?

Forms of free will are assigned to not-human beings, our body is now hybridised with technology. We are at the beginning of the “Anthropocene”, a period when human activities have had a significant global impact on the world’s ecosystems, but for the survival of human beings we must already foresee its end.

The challenge of identity does not have the power to answer all of these questions, but it can certainly bring to light the tensions that will govern accordingly to the lives of our students in the years to come.”

A BIG THANK YOU TO NABA AND ALL THE STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE WORKSHOP!
